Hari Narayanan was a well-known musician who devoted his entire life to Carnatic music. He had numerous disciples. He refused to commercialize his music. No one in his family would go against his wishes. He sent his son Soorya Narayanan to the music academy so that he would continue in the family tradition and perhaps become an even better musician than himself. By the time the son is capable of giving concerts by himself, the father becomes bed-ridden in a hospital. The ailing maestro is surrounded by money lenders. It is then that Soorya Narayanan realizes his father is neck deep in debt. This is a turning point in his career. His entire effort is now to extricate the family from the clutches of the money lenders.

Sooryan, directed by VM Vinu, has Jayaram doing the role of Soorya Narayanan, while Saikumar does the role of Hari Narayanan. Vimala, who was born and brought up in Australia, plays the female lead. She is a well known dancer who has performed in different parts of the world. Her role in Sooryan has to do with music and dance, and hence she is a natural fit. Sooryan is being produced under the Sri Chakra Films (P) Ltd. banner.
